My lovely daughter, Joanna DiBiase, recently completed a research project of mine. She took the 479 no-body murder trials on my list (as of February 2017) and examined how the body was disposed of in each case. I have long thought that the number one method was burial but it turns out that is incorrect. Of the 479 cases, the most common method of disposal when we know the method (important caveat) is disposing in water, 89 cases. The next most common method is burial at 73 cases. Then comes dumped or hidden on the ground, 48 cases followed by 46 cases of being disposed of in a landfill/dumpster. Burning the body accounts for 33 cases and 7 destroyed through the use of acid. there are 8 cases of miscellaneous disposal and, importantly, 170 cases where the method is unknown. This list may help detectives when trying to determine how a body was disposed of. Good stuff!
