Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett reported Friday his detectives arrested 60-year-old Sultan resident Bernard Swaim for first-degree murder in the 1982 disappearance of a Cashmere resident.

Stephen E. Smith, 30, was reported missing by family members on July 18, 1982. He was last seen six days prior at his home. Smith’s 1966 Pontiac Tempest was found abandoned on Dead Man’s Hill Road near Dryden in Chelan County several days after he was reported missing, according to a Chelan County Sheriff’s Office news release. Smith was never found.
